Project:

Route Design / Environmental Improvements, Gorgie, Edinburgh

Client:

The City of Edinburgh Council

Services:

Feasibility Study to Implementation

Value:

£250K (£100K 1st Phase Implementation)

Environmental improvement proposals aimed at improving safety, amenity and the image of two major routes leading to the main shopping area in Gorgie Dalry with a view to encouraging more people to walk to the shops and thereby help to rejuvenate the local economy. The project was carried out in close collaboration with the Gorgie Dalry Partnership Group which is made up of local residents and shopowners. An environmental artist was included in the design team from the outset to ensure that artworks were incorporated as an integral part of the proposals.

Improvements ranged from the basic repair and maintenance of existing surfaces to the provision of safer road crossing points, better quality public spaces and a strong artistic theme which echoed the historic past of the area and introduced a unifying identity to each route.
