STRATEGIC + MASTERPLANNING
Lowland Canals Mooring Strategy
Client : British Waterways (Scotland)
A comprehensive strategy to provide guidance for BWS and the relevant planning authorities on how the canal can obtain a ‘best fit’ within its emerging planning policy context and related development opportunities.
The study has four main elements. Firstly it provides a review of the existing and emerging statutory and non statutory planning guidance for the area, concentrating on planning policies which are of direct relevance to the lowland canals and are likely to result in changes to previous assumptions relating to its development potential. Secondly, with the benefit of the information gathered from the planning review, it provides an updated market appraisal - carried out by economic and tourism consultant Allan Balnaves - to reassess the development potential of the canal. Thirdly it puts forward nodal and moorings principles and proposals that are able to accommodate this development potential. And finally it provides outline design guidance to ensure a ‘best fit’ between new canal-side developments.
